What kind of work does Sobornost for the World Foundation do?

  Sobornost has made a commitment to help AIDS orphans in Kenya and Zambia with programs that provide financial support for their food, housing, education, and school supplies. In addition, we have brought the Fair Trade Movement to Long Island. We have established the World Village Fair Trade Market, Long Island's first Fair Trade store. The products sold are from over 25 developing countries and the producers of the products have been guaranteed a fair price for their labor.

What is Fair Trade?

  The Fair Trade Movement is an international network of producers, importers, retailers and consumers, which enables people in the developing world to sell products at a price that allows them to live in dignity and to support themselves and their families.

Is Sobornost for the World Foundation affiliated with any specific religion?

  Sobornost for the World Foundation has its roots in a Catholic prayer community; however, it has no formal ties to any specific religion. We are open to support from, and establishing social partnerships with, a broad spectrum of individuals and organizations that aspire to promote justice, love and peace in a world scarred by inequality and injustice.

What does the word Sobornost mean?

  Sobornost is a Russian word which refers to the unity of a group of people in mind, heart and soul.

Why do the people of sub-Saharan Africa need our help?

  The following facts speak for themselves: there are 14 million AIDS orphans today and 95% of them live in Africa; over 12,000 African children under the age of 5 die every day from preventable and curable diseases; universal primary education in Africa will not be achieved before the year 2129; and the life expectancy in Africa is approximately 36 years of age.

    Where will my donation go and how will it be used?

      Your tax-deductible donation will go to support our programs in Kenya and Zambia that provide much needed support to children orphaned by AIDS, and to support our efforts to promote The Fair Trade Movement. Our administrative costs are low, because all of the members of Sobornost for the World Foundation are volunteers.
